Chapter Eighteen

If there was one silver lining connected with living in the closet for William Castle’s sake, it was the patience that Alex had developed in an age of instant gratification. Days ago, Indra had promised she’d get the truth out of Nick Castor and Ethan had promised he’d get the 4-1-1 on Victor Padula. Having no other choice but to trust they’d come through, she had thrown all her energy into making Times Square profitable. A fundamental pillar in her plan—the task of revamping its web presence to attract both high-end and mid-level clientele—she was about to put in Tyler Falling’s capable hands.

While Alex had people to handle calls like this, this was different. Maybe it was the positive vibe that had lasted for hours following their first phone call or how she couldn’t get Tyler’s voice out of her head. For whatever reason, she wanted to be the one to give Tyler the good news. She dialed the number she’d jotted down when they last spoke. When the phone rang, butterflies came to life in her stomach, making her feel like a lovestruck teenager. What the hell? This is a business call.

The call connected. “This is Tyler Falling.”

“Good morning, Tyler. This is Alex Castle. I hope you don’t mind my calling your direct line.” That’s right, keep it professional. She’s not gay, and she’s married, for goodness’ sake.

“Of course not.” Tyler’s voice had the same sweet tone Alex detected during their first call. It had a familiar ring, but she couldn’t think of who it sounded like. An actress? A radio personality? A sexy encounter at a bar?

“Good because I have splendid news. I’ve never known our Chief Technology Officer to hand out such high praise over a proposal. He said we’d be crazy to pass this up, so we’d like to offer you the contract with one minor modification.”

“What’s that?”

“We’re increasing your bottom line by twelve percent. I think the family connection may have had something to do with it, but you way underbid the contract.”

“To be honest, we’re really out of our depth when valuing our work at a corporate level. You’re the first major company to consider us.”

“Well, then, I’m glad to break in at the ground floor because after word gets out about the caliber of work your firm produces, you’ll have the Fortune 500 knocking down your door.”

“You’re making me blush, Alex. If you have the time, I’d like to ask you a few questions. It’s my way of getting to know you better, so I can best meet your expectations.”

“For you? Of course. Fire away.” The prospect of spending a few extra minutes with Tyler posed a way better option than dealing with Kelly or her brother.

“Great. Some of these questions might sound out of place for a website design, but I like to know what makes my clients tick so I won’t waste their time with mockups far afield.”

“That’s an ingenious approach. I’m impressed.” Smart and talented. What were the odds
